Shooting Guards

Wally Szczerbiak fits in real well with the Celtics as their second option on the offense. Szczerbiak has career averages of 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Wally is a great shooter that must be accounted for by the defense at all times. Szczerbiak has made 49.9% of his FGs, 40.3% of his 3’s and 85.9% of his free-throws for his career.Â

Delonte West will be the back-up at shooting guard and also get some time at the point. West is a good shooter and passer, but he never embraced a starting job with the Celtics. This should be the perfect role for West to play. West has averaged 26.6 minutes per game in his career and produced 9.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steal per contest.

Tony Allen will be the third string shooting guard for the Celtics. Allen is a one-dimensional offensive player, as he is a scorer. Allen has averaged 6.7 points per game in his career despite only playing 17.5 minutes per game.

Point Guards

The Celtics traded for Sebastian Telfair and drafted Rajon Rondo to shore up their point guard position. Telfair has alot of raw talent, but he’ll need to convert that talent into numbers on the court. Telfair has played in 136 games in his NBA career, but only has averaged 21.9 minutes per game on the court. Telfair needs to make better shot selection as he only has hit 39.4% of his shots in his career. Telfair has career averages of 8.1 points per game and 3.5 assists per game, but those numbers should skyrocket with more playing time as long as he plays under control.Â

Rajon Rondo was picked to help the defense, as he’s a very active player. But Rondo, like Telfair is not a good shooter.

Delonte West could also log minutes at the point guard position. West has played in 110 games for the Celtics and had career averages of 9.2 points per game and 3.5 assists per game. West’s biggest problem is that he has off-guard skills, but a point guard body.

Theo Ratliff hurting

Theo Ratliff is hurting. Ratliff’s back is acting up and it might affect his availability for the beginning of the season.

Doc Rivers, right man for the job?

Blogged under Front Page by Nothing but Net on Thursday 26 October 2006 at 11:17 pm

Doc Rivers is entering his third year as head coach of the Boston Celtics and he has compiled a 78-86 record here. The Celtics have a pretty young roster behind Paul Pierce and Wally Szczerbiak, so Rivers will have to be a teacher as the coach here. Rivers has coached 7 seasons in the NBA with Boston & Orlando and has compiled a 249-254 record, so he has to take the next step as an NBA coach himself, or he won’t be around too long.

Rivers was 3-4 in one appearance with the Celtics in the playoffs and has an 8-14 career playoff record with the Celtics & Magic.
