The Boston Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and 2 first round picks (one is top three protected by the Celtics). Sure the Celtics gave up a lot to get Garnett but the Celtics have turned from one of the worst teams in the NBA to one of the better ones in the Eastern Conference with this trade. The Celtics now have Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to add to Paul Pierce which gives the Celtics one of the most impressive threesomes in the NBA. Garnett also signed a three year extension with the Celtics as part of this deal. Garnett played in 76 games (all starts) last season for the Timberwolves and he averaged 39.4 minutes, 22.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. He also shot 47.6% from the floor, 21.4% from three point range and 83.5% from the free throw line. Garnett is still in his prime so he will likely improve on his career averages this season with the Celtics. Garnett has played in 927 games (890 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 38.3 minutes, 20.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.7 blocked shots per game. He has made 49.1% of his shots from the floor, 28.9% of his three pointers and 78% of his free throws over his NBA career. The sky is now the limit for the Celtics but the cost was high.
Al Jefferson is the rising star of the bunch that’s leaving Boston. He played in 69 games (60 starts) for the Celtics last season and he averaged 33.6 minutes, 16.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. He also shot 51.4% from the floor but only 68.1% from the free throw line which tells you that his game is close to the basket. Jefferson is the only player in this trade that could make it look bad for the Celtics. Ryan Gomes played in 73 games (60 starts) for the Celtics last season and he averaged 31.2 minutes, 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 46.7% from the floor, 38.1% from the three point line and 81.1% from the free throw line. Gomes is a decent player who might start right away for the T-Wolves. Swingman Gerald Green might be the most exciting player that is leaving Boston as he is quite a finisher on the fast break. He played in 81 games (26 starts) for the Celtics last season and he averaged 22.0 minutes, 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. He shot 41.9% from the floor, 36.8% from the three point line and 80.5% from the free throw line. Point guard Sebastian Telfair was on his way out of Boston one way or another because of his off the floor conduct so the Celtics will not miss him at all. Telfair played in78 games (30 starts) for the Celtics last season and he averaged 6.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He only shot 37.1% from the floor, 28.9% from the three point line and 81.8% from the free throw line. Center Theo Ratliff only played in 2 games (2 starts) last season for the Celtics last season and he averaged 22.0 minutes, 2.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He shot 33.3% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line. That was a lot to give up for Garnett but he will be worth is as long as he stays healthy.
