The Boston Celtics didn’t have much time for rookies this season

The Celtics are a veteran team with their eyes on winning a World Championship. With that in mind they didn’t have much time for rookies this season. Glen “Big Baby” Davis did get some playing time for the Celtics this season and if he can stay somewhat in shape the Celtics have something here. He played in 69 games (1 start) as a rookie this season and he averaged 13.6 minutes, 4.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Davis could be a big part of the future for the Celtics but he won’t get big minutes for a few years.

Point guard Gabe Pruitt didn’t get much of a chance to show what he could do this season. He played in 15 games (0 starts) this season and he averaged 6.3 minutes, 2.1 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. Pruitt needs to improve his shooting if he ever wants to be anything more than a #11 or #12 player on a roster. He only shot 35.9% from the floor this season and he only shot 50% from the free throw line and those numbers are unacceptable.

The Boston Celtics don’t give much playing time to their rookies

Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Gabe Pruitt don’t get much of a chance to show what they can do. Davis has played in 46 games so far this season and he is averaging 13.0 minutes, 4.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He is a decent shooter inside as he has made 52.3% of his shots from the floor. He does need to improve at the free throw line as he has only made 69.7% from the charity stripe. Davis needs to get in better shape if he ever wants to get more minutes than he is getting right now. Pruitt has played in only 12 games this season and he is averaging 5.6 minutes, 2.0 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. He has not shot the ball too well (37.9%) but it’s hard to get into a rhythm when you don’t get to play much.

The Boston Celtics are happy with “Big Baby”

The Boston Celtics were just hoping that Glen “Big Baby” Davis would be good enough to give Kevin Garnett a little rest this season off of the bench and he is doing a solid job. Davis has played in 20 games so far this season for the Celtics and he is averaging 13.0 minutes, 4.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He is shooting a solid 47.3% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line. The Celtics do hope that he will get in better shape and that might come soon as the rest of the Celtics will push him in the weight room.

Gabe Pruitt has not got much of a chance to show what he can do on the court yet. He has only played in 5 games so far this season for the Celtics and he’s averaged 4.8 minutes, 2.6 points, 0.4 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. He also is shooting a solid 50% from the floor. It might be hard for the rookie to get much playing time with the Celtics using a veteran bench.

The rookies of the Boston Celtics earn a C+

Blogged under Bloglockers, Rookie Report, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 20 April 2007 at 8:05 am

The Celtics rookies might have got a higher grade from me if they played a little more during the season. They showed at the end of the season that they all have game, but when the Celtics get healthy most of them will wind up bench players. Guard Rajon Rondo played in 78 games this season and he averaged 23.5 minutes per game, 6.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Rondo is a shutdown defender but he’ll need to improve on offense if he wants to eventually be a starter for the Celtics. Guard Allen Ray played in 47 games and he averaged 15.1 minutes, 6.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. Ray shot 41.4% from three-point range and he proved that he will be a valuable reserve for the Celtics in the future. Forward Leon Powe played in 63 games and he averaged 11.4 minutes, 4.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. Powe also showed that he will be a decent reserve for the Celtics. Forward Kevinn Pinkney didn’t show up until the end of the season and he played in 6 games and averaged 16.7 minutes, 5.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. He played pretty well for the Celtics at the end of the season so he will likely get a chance to battle for a roster spot on the Celtics for next season.

The Boston Celtics’ rookies have run hot and cold this season

The Celtics rookies have been very active on the court but they haven’t shot the ball too well. Rajon Rondo (37.9%) and Allen Ray (37.2%) have been the main offenders. Rondo has played in 65 games this season and he’s averaged 5.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 20.8 minutes per game. He’s been a stellar defender but he has a ways to go to be a good offensive player for the Celtics. Allen Ray has started to get a little more playing time as of late but he’s only averaged 5.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game. Leon Powe hasn’t got much of a chance to play but it looks as if he’s got some game. He has played in 50 games and he’s averaging 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in only 9.5 minutes per game. The Celtics should be playing him more and Brian Scalabrine less.
